Maybe, working for yourself or starting business hasn’t come to your mind. There’re certain things that you need to do to grab the attention of your current boss.

We all want to make progress in life. We all want to earn more money, have a bigger office, obtain  some prestige and feel satisfied about the goals that we’ve achieved. However, there are always limits to the amount of people who can be promoted and the amount of work opportunities. This also means that there’s a lot of competition out there to succeed. However, by using the following tips, you can give yourself that extra boost you need to grow and develop in your current job, and to really stand out and get noticed.

Know your strengths & weaknesses

The first and, probably, one of the most important steps to having a successful career involves a certain level of self-awareness.

  • What skills do you have and what are you really good at?
  • What are you interested in?
  • What are you passionate about?

If you’re going to get ahead, you need to know your strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you
admit to yourself that you are no good at doing admin, then you can find someone to help you, or you can hand this task over to someone else. If you’re a hopeless public speaker, then you could consider getting some training in this area. When you start being honest with yourself about what you can and can’t do, you’ll be able to find solid solutions to compensate for your weaknesses. In this way, you can eliminate any weaknesses and ensure that you’re functioning on a strong foundation.

How to help those who can help you

Once you’ve defined your own strengths and weaknesses, take a look at your boss. The fact of the
matter is that everyone has flaws. You can use this to your advantage, provided you can use your strengths to compensate for your boss’s weaknesses. This is a great way to build a close relationship with your boss, but you have to be subtle about it. For example, if your boss struggles to come up with creative, new ideas, and you’re great at it, feed him some suggestions and allow him to adopt them as his own. If your boss likes what you have to offer, you’ll soon find you become both an invaluable asset to your boss and your company, as well as a trusted person. The saying goes that “it’s not what you know, but who you know”. Hence, building a good relationship with your boss, and even his or her boss, may just get you that promotion a lot sooner than you thought.

If you’re running your own business try applying these principles to your business partners and other associates. It’s essential to establish good relationships if you want to be successful. This means you should take the time to get to know your business colleagues. The more you do for them, the more they may ultimately do for you.

This means you need to determine what contribution you can make in your current job. You must then try to use your talents & skills to make a long lasting impression, which may also boost your morale.  This will go a long way in grabbing your boss’s attention and get noticed.
