What are keywords?







The term “keywords” refers to the words or phrases that people type into Google or other search engines when they are looking for products, services or information. The search engine will then display certain websites that are most relevant to the keywords used.

What you, therefore, need to do is to use keywords on your website that people will type into search engines, and that the search engines’ crawlers and spiders will find when they search the Web.

Why are keywords so important

If you want to market your products/website on the online, you can’t afford to overlook the importance of keywords. The truth is that the Internet is a massive market of information that is constantly growing. Competition is rife and it’s becoming increasingly more difficult to get a top ranking on Google based on a single keyword.

More and more businesses and individuals are entering the market arena with the same type of products and services on offer. That said, it doesn’t matter if you are relying on ordinary search engines or using Google AdWords to get noticed. Your success will depend on the keywords on your website.

Search engines are constantly searching for words and phrases within millions of different websites that meet the criteria that users have typed into the search box. Hence, if you know how to use the right words and phrases on your website, you could soon find that you are getting more online customers than you ever imagined possible.

Two entrepreneurs








Lets take a practical example of two entrepreneurs who want to market their guesthouses online.

Henry, our first entrepreneur, has opened a guesthouse on a game farm. He creates a state of the art website to market his business online.

However, he gives little thought to the wording used on his website, preferring to use more pictures and graphics than text to market his websites. He then launches his site online, and sits back to see.

Frank, our second entrepreneur, has also opened a guesthouse business. He sets up a simple site and takes the time to really think about wording he wants to use to describe his business

He comes up with great keywords such as ” guesthouse in Texas”, “rooms for hire”, “private, affordable accommodation”, “bed and breakfast facilities”, “comfortable lodgings”, peaceful atmosphere”, “reasonable rates” etc.

Frank not only uses good keywords on his site. He makes use of Google AdWords and regularly updates his content to keep it fresh

The clear difference

Let’s now review how Henry’s and Frank’s online marketing initiatives are doing. Henry has little success. Unfortunately, he didn’t understand the importance of keywords.

In fact, what he failed to realize is that search engines look for very specific words and not at pictures. By placing lots of images on his site with little text. He is actually reducing his chances of being found online.

Henry isn’t using any tools available online (such as Google AdWords) to increase his business’s exposure, and he never changes or reviews his site’s content. The problem with this is that search engines constantly look for what’s new, so Henry’s site quickly becomes obsolete

So far, Henry has had little success with his his internet marketing.  Frank is having great success with his website.

What you need to do
  • Brainstorm a list of target specific keywords. Brainstorm and come up with a list of keywords that you think will be most appropriate. by putting yourself in your potential customers’ shoes.
  • Ask yourself these three questions:
  1. What would your customer type into a search engine?
  2. What phrases really define your business?
  3. What words will attract the most lucrative traffic to your website?

The point you need to keep in mind here is that you don’t just want to attract any type of traffic to your website – you want to attract quality traffic, as you have a greater chance of converting this type of traffic into sales.
